Chapter 1  From My Childhood

“God is our refuge and strength, our very present and well-approved help in trouble.” (Ps. 46:1)

I was born in Macau on October 4, 1924, in a Christian family. 1923-1928, my father Paul Lin was a pastor of the Baptist Church there. He gave me the name Lin Xian Gao before I was born. “Xian” means “to offer to”, “Gao” means “the Lamb of God”. My English surname is also pronounced Lamb. When my father was in Singapore in 1938, he gave me another name, Samuel. Samuel Lamb has the same meaning as my Chinese name. A few years after my birth, we moved to number 35 Damazhan on the second floor in Guangzhou.

In this book, I want to share with you about some of the blessings God bestowed upon me. If a Christian has never suffered, then he cannot understand God’s blessings. He is still a child without training. Therefore when we suffer, we should never complain to God or blame others. Instead, we should calm down and depend on God all the more, realizing that nothing can happen to us that He does not allow. That’s the way to do it.

I grew up in a family that knew God. Throughout my childhood I had the advantage of receiving the Good Word . The “Good News of Jesus Christ” as my “Bread of Life”. My father was a very diligent father and pastor . My family influenced me greatly, especial my father. He was in Detroit Michigan. When he graduated from the middle school, he wished to enter seminary. My grandfather said: “ if you enter university, I support you, otherwise, I wouldn’t.” After 3 weeks, my father still said: “I’ ll go to seminary.” Then he worked to be a waiter in my grandfather’s restaurant half a year. He earned $ 1000 and put on a bank, ready to go to seminary.

One night, my father heard: “Paul, Paul, what’s the use of your $ 1000 ? My father said: “I want to go to seminary.” He heard the same 3 nights. Then he took out the $ 1000 and sent to Niagra Seminary. After that, no voice he heard again. Not many days later, my father received a letter from Niagra, saying: “Our Seminary just lack $ 1000 before the new year. Now we received your $ 1000. Praise God !”

My father was very happy through this experience from God. He continued his work for another $ 1000, then he went to study Bible in Niagra Seminary.

My father had many good testimonies that influenced my whole life to serve God in Guangzhou.

My parents were shining examples of how I should live; they did not “just” tell me how to live, but they showed me by example.

First I would like to relate my childhood experiences. At about 5 years of age (1929), I lived in a very damp place (in a mountainous area) and contracted a severe case of diphtheria. A doctor who came from Macau to look after me, told my father that it was a very serious kind of bronchitis and he wanted me to go to the hospital immediately. At that time there was a Baptist hospital in our area and a doctor by the name of Hartley from America was working there. Doctor Hartley’s specialty was ENT (eye, ear, nose and throat) and he could not heal me. In those days medicine was not as advanced as it is today. In those days, the illness that I had was not easily overcome. The doctor put me into a room and told my father that they might perform a tracheotomy (operation) to enable me to breathe, but they were 90% convinced that I would die. My father said: “If my son has only a 10% chance of survival and if he is going to die, I want him to die at our own home.”

My father took me home and asked all the people who believed in God to our house …… and they began to pray. From night until daybreak they prayed. Dr. Hartley came to the house the next day thinking that I would most likely be dead when he arrived. He walked up the stairs very quietly and gently called my name. My father brought me up to the doctor and Dr. Hartley said: “Miracle, miracle!” He was also a Christian. God had healed me …… this was the first miracle. The second miracle was when a doctor from Macau, who was a friend of my father’s, gave him $ 60.00 (not knowing that $ 60.00 was exactly what we were short for the hospital bill). My father had been praying to God for my medical bills. The remaining amount of money that he owed was just $ 60. He had not told anyone about this, so he knew that it came from God. These are two of the many blessings God has bestowed upon my life related to healing. There are many other miracles and blessings that I will not go into right now. Since I was almost dead once (at 5 years of age), my life was now totally committed to God (with no reservations). I wanted to do His work only.

Now I would like to relate how God protected us during war time: how He presented His blessings upon us. I attended primary school in Canton (Guangzhou) and during those years (until 1937) I went to Cheung Chau Island, one of the suburbs in Hong Kong, for the summer months. After finishing primary school in 1937, I moved to Hong Kong where I stayed on Cheung Chau Island.  My father built a little hut to avoid the heat. We called it “Hallelujah Hut”. We hang many Bible verses around the hut.  Later that year the Japanese bombed Canton and we could not go back there anymore. The hut that had been used to avoid the heat during summer time was now used as a shelter for my family.  The school in which I continued my study in Cheung Chau emphasized English rather than the classical Chinese that I used to study in Canton. Three years later I was transferred to Queen’s College in Hong Kong. Every Saturday I went back to Cheung Chau to visit my mother and my younger sisters.

About that time, my father moved to Singapore and took employment as a Bible teacher. He often wrote to me urging me to start going to a Bible institute to prepare myself to work for the Lord. At that time my mind was towards the Lord, but my heart was more towards the world. I wanted to learn English because English would have gotten me better job opportunities in the future.  My life went on as a student in Hong Kong; Saturdays visiting mother at Cheung Chau, and Sundays back to my relatives in Hong Kong to attend school. Then, on Sunday, December 8, 1941, the ferry boat I took to go back to Hong Kong, stopped suddenly in the middle of the sea. I didn’t know why it stopped until later. The boat got news that the Japanese were bombing Kowloon ¼¼ just across the bay from Hong Kong. The captain stopped the ferry, debating whether to go ahead to Hong Kong or back to Cheung Chau. He decided to go ahead to Hong Kong. Now I was in complete isolation from my family. I could not return to school. I used my days to study, pray, and read the Bible.

When the bombings got close to Hong Kong everybody ran for shelter. I stayed on the fourth floor, totally believing that God was my shelter, and trusting in Him. One morning, the bombing zeroed in directly on my area, and it was no longer safe to stay there. I decided to go and stay at the Baptist Church on Cain Road for shelter. I decided to walk there by a route different from the usual one ¼¼ a longer route below the mountain. While walking, I saw the bombs making direct hits on the route I routinely took.  By God’s grace I was spared again. God was my guide through the bombings. Psalm 91: 5 tells us: “You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots of the wicked) that flies by day.”

I stayed with Pastor Liu in the Baptist Church until Christmas Eve (1941). Hong Kong was lost to the Japanese by then. The bombing had stopped. I left for Cheung Chau to see if my mother and sisters were okay. We decided to move inland to stay with my mother’s brother. He was a doctor in Zhaoqing, a town not too far from Guangxi Province.

We went to Zhaoqing by boat. We were in one of four sailboats traveling together. On the way to Zhaoqing, three of the four boats were taken by pirates. Our boat was the only one spared.  One night I found that my money had been stolen. I told a brother who was a fellow passenger during the escape. He said: “Later, we’ll check. Go back to sleep for the time being.” I knew he was only saying it. How could we find anything in this crammed area?  Later, I awoke in the middle of the night, and the money had miraculously appeared in my pocket. The trip was very hard on us.  Many times my mother, sisters and I had to be separated to sit in different areas ¼¼ all of us in very cramped quarters. No matter how long we were separated, we always managed to meet each other in the end.

We arrived in Zhaoqing. The streets were empty. My uncle told me that everybody had left the town temporarily to avoid the heavy Japanese bombing. He suggested that we move to the town that his mother came from.

Moving to a new town (Wuzhou), we settled down and I was able to get into the Alliance Bible Institute. I often saw God’s hand in those days¼¼for two years we lived a hand to mouth existence, always managing tuition and food. Each time that I faced a problem I prayed.

To get away from the Japanese, after two years (1944) we moved to Panghua. Invasion was rampant. I cut hair for people without formal training, yet I cut very well. The little money we had to begin with lasted us half a year. While I cut hair I talked to the customers about Jesus. They were all my captive audience.  The war was getting closer and closer to where we lived, so we had to take shelter again to avoid the heavy Japanese bombing. My mother, sisters and I had to move from place to place¼ ¼sometimes with relatives, sometimes not. During all the hardships I experienced in this period of trials, the Lord had always been looking after us. I found that through faith one can do everything. “We should therefore never worry about our future.” Why does God allow us to have hardships? He wants to sustain us in hardships. He wants us to grow and know His strength in the midst of our trials.

During and after the war we saw the Lord’s many blessings upon us in each step we took. During the war my grandfather was ill with a badly swollen leg and no doctors were around. I asked him to pray and to have faith in the Lord. For two weeks he was very sick, but he kept praying and was healed.

God manifests His blessings in different ways to different people. He manifests His presence in many different ways. Some people suffer physically like Paul who was beaten until he bled.  Some people suffer through illness, but the most important thing is one’s faith during these trials. We must live and witness for the glory of God, not for ourselves. Many people have suffered for the Lord. Let us understand what they understood……that our Lord is the only true and living God. Whether we witness (or receive) large miracles or small miracles: if we have faith, we have already been blessed. There is no need for us to chase after miracles. If God wills it, He will show them to us. If He does not give them to us, we cannot request them from Him. We should leave everything in His hands and praise our Lord always.

In 1979 I got a form of throat disease that was known to be very painful and difficult to heal. I had taken a few students to teach English, but I could not talk. The only way to teach was to whisper to my students. Everyone felt drained because of my whispering. I tried all the medicines, both Western and Chinese.  The devil worked on my throat. Then on March 15, 1980, my throat suddenly felt good. I thought for a moment, “Could it be all the medicine that healed me?” After a while the pain came again.  God was disciplining me, so I prayed for another chance and committed not to say that it was the medicine that healed me.  About one mouth later God healed me again. God had again displayed His wondrous works. I give all the glory to our Lord.  In 1956, while in jail, I wrote the following hymns (numbers from “The Voice of the Desert Hymnal”) # 112 - “We Need Revival,” # 113 - “Know Yourself,” #114- “Dismantling Before Rebuilding,” and # 115 - “Be Humble”.

Now I want to talk about my prison life. I have been arrested twice. They said I was a counter-revolutionary. This was before the Cultural Revolution. Then I preached the gospel freely. Many foreigners have visited our church and attended our meetings.  Many were from America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Others were from Britain, Holland, Norway, Austria, Germany, Ethiopia, India, Romania and Korea. Recently some came from France, Nepal, Mancara, Finland, Spain, Portugal and even a Jew came here.  Our meeting began on April 23, 1950. Every Sunday we had our audience of about 300. I talked on the ground floor and on the second floor by a loudspeaker.

Chapter 2  Twice Imprisoned

My first arrest was on September 14, 1955, and I was with our coworkers. Three of us were jailed for one year and four months. We were all released on January 28, 1957. When I came out, our church still stood. This first time none of us had been sentenced. We were then free until May 30, 1958, when I was arrested a second time, and held until May 29, 1978, ¼¼ a full 20 years. The first five years I was in a farm in Guangdong. I could hardly bear the hard work.

The leader let me cut the hair of the prisoners. One time I was cutting the hair of a prisoner who fed the pigs when suddenly the roof fell down, but God protected me and saved his life. Though he was knocked down and his face was covered with blood, he was alive. I was not hurt at all. Praise God.

At that time I had no Bible. When I was in the Alliance Bible Institute in Wuzhou in 1942, I had memorized entire passages every morning. I had memorized all of the Pauline Epistles during that time. I memorized one paragraph every morning from Romans to Hebrews, as well as many Psalms. Some of my favorite memorized scriptures were Psalms 1, 2, 19, 23, 24, 27, 51, 90, 91, 100, 102, 103, 146, 150; Isaiah 53; The Sermon on the Mount; and John 14: - 17: . I didn’t know why I chose those Scriptures to memorize, but the Lord knows. Because of the memorized scripture, during my years in prison, I had God’s Word in my heart.

On the farm there was a Baptist preacher. He had a New Testament in his pocket and the leader let him keep it. I borrowed the New Testament to copy and somebody reported it. As a result, I had to go to Shanxi Taiyuan Xiyu Coal Mine. I was in the coal mine for 15 years. I could hardly bear the hard work. They forced me to join the coal cars one by one. The coal cars were joined together the same way as train cars. I had to join them by hand. I had to do it very quickly and carefully¼¼fast work was expected of me, and if I was careless only once, I might lose a finger. Somebody who had been joining the coal cars for only three days lost one of his fingers and another lost his foot after three weeks. During the 15 years I spent in the coal mine I came close to losing a finger one time. I joined over 2 million cars times, and I still have all of my fingers, Praise God.

There is a small cut on my left thumb, but that injury wasn’t even work related. I was cutting an apple and I cut my thumb.  Though I worked in a “lion’s den” the Lord kept my life. One time all the cars were joined together and I had called a locomotive to take them away. The locomotive hitched up to the train of empty cars and pushed the empty cars into an out lane. I stood beside a pillar, counting the cars one after the other, when suddenly all the cars fell together and piled u#p. One of those cars fell against the pillar beside me, and the other side was against my neck before it stopped. I could not move away because there was a wall behind me. Praise God it stopped when it did. If it had pushed one inch farther, I would have been finished. Again the Lord preserved my life, and (at that time) I didn’t know why. I never dreamed I had any chance to come out to preach again. I thought the Lord let me suffer 20 years and that now I was to die, but the Lord wonderfully preserved my life. When all the cars were moved away, my neck was without pain, and there was not a mark on me. I could even breathe freely. Praise God!

One time I stood before the train ready to connect the locomotive, but the locomotive rushed to me and stopped quickly.  There was no room for me to move between the cars and the locomotive. If I had been fat, I would have been finished. Praise God, He protected me again. I could not move. When the locomotive moved away, there again was not a mark on me, and I could breathe freely. They said: “You were lucky.” To that I exclaimed, “I have God!” Praise God for He protected me wonderfully. Once again, as I talked with a fellow prisoner, when walking away, two cars closed together. If I had begun to walk a second later, I would have been finished, but again the Lord preserved me. Praise God. When a fellow prisoner knew of these occurrences, he said: “Oh, you are lucky.” My response was: “Oh, praise God, I’m not hurt!” If you asked me to tempt God, I would not dare to. This time the Lord sent His angel to protect me.  Praise God again! Many, many times it was like that. The Lord protected me in prison for 20 years, 5 years in Guangdong and 15 years in Shanxi.

When the Gang of Four was imprisoned, the government began to criticize Confucius. The people said Confucius had both “god” and evil spirits and the government said that they are all wrong. The political leader called me to criticize Christianity and called the father of the Catholic church to criticize the Catholics.  He criticized the Catholics and he said: “I believe no more because Imperialism has cheated me.” But how could I criticize Christ and Christianity? I couldn’t do that! I didn’t know how to reply to the leader. I prayed to God and said: “My God is not the same as Confucius. His ‘god’ was false but my God is true.” Then the leader told me, “Criticize, it will be a benefit to you.” I thought to myself, “I was imprisoned for 16 years, what benefit would I gain?  Perhaps I would be released immediately¼¼still in 4 years I will be finished with the 20 years. If I criticize Christ, I can come out 4 years early, and then my 16 years in jail would have all been in vain. I cannot criticize Christ!” Then I told the leader: “I still believe in the Lord Jesus. If I told you I do not believe, I would be cheating you.” Then he repeated, “You must criticize; it will be a benefit for you.” Then I ran back and prayed to God. However, I still refused to criticize Christ as a person and Christianity as a way of life. In fact, I criticized the liberals who were betraying our Lord by false criticism.

Afterwards the leader said: “Oh, you criticized well.”  Hallelujah! Praise God! I learned a lesson from Peter. Peter boasted about himself and he fell. Therefore, I was trembling and I prayed asking God to sustain my faith. Peter denied Him 3 times, if the Lord had not sustained my faith, I would have denied Him many times more than Peter. Thank God! He heard my prayer. In 20 years I had not denied the Lord once. Praise God, not by my own effort, but by the will and power of God, has my faith remained strong.

I had been sentenced to 20 years in prison. When I had 3 months left, the leader called me to train another young boy who was 22 years old. I trained him for about one month, and he learned to connect the coal cars very rapidly. But when I came out, he was carried out by 4 prisoners. When the locomotive dragged away the loaded cars, he pulled the pin between 40 and 41 at the appropriate time. The first 40 cars were dragged away, but somehow he slipped down to the railway (instead of off to the side of the tracks) and more than ten cars ran over him. He had brain damage and died. By God’s grace I joined 2 million cars in 15 years without a single injury but he only lasted three months.  Praise God. PRAISE GOD ! It wasn’t me, but God.

Chapter 3  Released from Jail

I was released from jail on May 29, 1978. But I did not return to Guangzhou until July 17. My mother, my sisters, my daughter, my son, my grandson and my granddaughter were all alive.  Unfortunately, my wife died two years before I was released and my father died 5 years before her death. Praise God, after I was released I had 11 months with my mother before she died. At that time I taught English, and after the lesson I told them about Jesus.  After the first girl believed in the Lord Jesus, she then brought her cousin in, so that every Sunday we had four to worship God.  Then another four every Sunday evening, so we were growing up in our faith. Praise God, at our first baptism in 1980 we only baptised four. One time in 1989, we baptised 169. Altogether in these few years we baptised over a thousand. We had over 300 people whom we baptised, including many locations outside the city. Every Sunday, we have our Sunday service at 9:00 a.m.  This was the first one. On Wednesday we held a second worship service, on Saturday evening a third. Three times we preached the same message but to different groups. Each time more than 300 worshipped. All together we were holding 3 services, and ministering to about 1000 people. Every Sunday evening we have our “break bread” meeting, celebrating our “Lord’s Supper in the upper room.” On the first and third Tuesday evening of every month, we had a Bible class for those who were to be baptised.  Every second and fourth Tuesday evening we had our young people’s meeting. We had our prayer meeting at 2: 00 #p.m. every Wednesday afternoon and our Gospel preaching on Thursday evenings. Friday evenings we went out to visit the people. We had meetings every evening of the week except Mondays and Fridays.  Most of us are young people. Praise God!

On January 3, 1986, at a special meeting a delegate of the White House presented me with a pen from Ronald Reagan, then President of the United States. I treasured this special gift. On April 26, 1987, I received a Bible from him. In the meeting when I received the pen, some of the Americans spoke one by one for 5-10 minutes each. Forty Americans came. The people were crowded everywhere. Even the grandson of the President of the United States wept. All of them were fervent in their expressions of love for us.

Now I want to talk about how I was called to the Government Hall 6 times in 1988. From the time that the Gang of Four were defeated until the Tian An Men Square incident in 1989, Christians have had much more freedom of religion. In 1981 the meeting of the Shanghai Christian Association declared house churches are still working. In Guangzhou it also stated that there is no underground church. House churches are legal. They are all patriotic. The People’s Post of January 27, 1953, said “House Churches are promoted by law. The major point of the 19th document (as of December 1985) was that ‘House Churches are a legal activity if they are not breaking the law and if they are not harmful to the people. This provided that they are self-controlled, self-supporting and self-propagated.’ ” If anyone still says that some House Churches are illegal, we will disagree with them.

There has been a great change in religious freedom since August 1988. From August until the end of the year the Government called on me six times.

The first time was on August 5, 1988. Beginning at 9: 30 a.m. they read to me the 33 restrictions contained in Document Number 44 of the Guangdong Government and in the Guangzhou document. They called me to register and urged us to stop our church. If I registered, we would be controlled by Three Self Churches and the Christian United Front Association. Then we would be joined to the Three Self Church indirectly. Furthermore, the 33 restrictions are in contrast to the religious freedom of the law. So I refused. At last they said: “We will post Document Number 44 beside your house and tell your believers not to become involved.”

The second time was on September 1, 1988. This time they treated me very politely. They asked me many questions and finally said: “The last time we met we told you to stop your services but you haven’t. You must stop now.” We continued our services anyway.

On September 6, 1988, at 3: 30 #p.m. they came a third time.  Three people came and talked to me asking me to cooperate with the Three Self Churches.

The fourth time was on September 9, 1988, at 3: 30 #p.m.  Two people came to talk with me and at last they said: “You may choose any of the Three Self Churches.” I refused again answering, “If I accept this offer we will then be controlled by them.”

The fifth time was on December 7, 1988, at 9: 00 a.m. They asked me many questions. At last they said: “Jesus parents registered, you should do so as well.” Then I said: “That was the census registration in the Roman Empire, even non-believers registered. I have my identification card, election card, and I have a house certificate also. But there is no House Church registration in the Bible.”

The sixth time was on December 28, 1988. They asked me to consult with the Three Self Church. Finally, I asked them a few questions. The first thing I said was that the South China Daily Post on March 12, 1958, stated that I was a rightist. A rightist should not be arrested, but I was arrested on May 30. The court judgment hardly mentioned what my crimes were. Anyway, my sentence was longer than YUAL WEN YUEN’s, one of the Gang of Four. Why was I sentenced to 20 years with a 5 years probationary term, while he was sentenced to only 18 years? That was a wrongful conviction and an unjust sentence. Now they have announced my rehabilitation. Next I told them what happened on October 10, 1983, at 12: 30 #p.m. They searched my house and when I asked them for a search warrant they did not have one. At last they took many things away and gave me a receipt. Finally I said to them: “You have not yet given the ground floor of my house back to me.” They answered me politely and asked me to write to them again. At last they asked me: “How many foreigners preached in your church?” I said: “After I preached, some foreigners gave us their greetings and encouraged us or gave their testimonies.” We are not now, nor have we ever been controlled by any foreigners. The foreign evangelists and believers have joined our service and have had fellowship with us. We say that is international friendshi#p. The largest number of foreigners to join us at one time was over 100 Americans. Usually there are only a few brothers and sisters from different countries who join our services. They heard that I preach the whole Bible freely. Through these services, they discovered that the only religious freedom that we have is in hiding (within house churches). They learned that those Christians who choose to worship outside of the “Three Self Church” risk great persecution.

Now I want to talk about when I entered the hospital again recently. After 60 years I entered a hospital again. “For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou has tried us, as silver is tried.” ( Psalm 66: 10 ) “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I hast tried might learn thy statutes.” ( Psalm 119: 71 )

In my youth, I wasn’t very healthy, but I seldom caught a serious disease. I always suffered from things like headaches and dizziness or a cold. I had not been to the hospital since the time that I suffered from diphtheria when I was 5 years old. I entered the hospital a second time on April 29, 1989; 60 years later. At that time I thought perhaps I was to stay twice in the hospital just as I stayed twice in jail. On Friday, April 28, 1989, I woke up at 5:00 a.m. because I had to use the rest room. Just as I laid back down on my bed again I began to have pain in my left kidney. I thought it would stop after a moment because I had had this pain a few times previously (two or three months before). Each time in the past I prayed to God for half an hour and the pain stopped. However, this time the intense pain persisted, so I got dressed and was taken by 4 brothers and sisters to the nearest district hospital on Cheng Nan Road. The doctor said I was suffering from a kidney stone. He gave me an injection, but it did not relieve the pain. A while later he gave me another injection, but the pain continued. After a long time we went back home, but I was still in pain and it was too much to bear.

About 10: 00 #p.m. that night a few brothers and sisters took me to the First People Hospital of Guangzhou. The doctor gave me another injection, but the pain continued. Then they gave me 2 bottles of glucose with antibiotics by (through intravenous catheter) because I couldn’t eat or drink anything. Then I found that I could not urinate. The doctor gave me one more injection, but it didn’t have any effect either. As the pain continued, it made me recall the past. On September 19 and December 22, 1982, after I received an injection the pain stopped, but this time I got four injections, and my pain was still severe. Then they inserted a catheter and I urinated into a small bag. So we went back to my house. Even though I had urinated, I still had great pain. I did not go to bed, but I held my hands very tightly. Praise God, I had not asked God to take my life. I just thought it would be far better if I could go back to heaven, but I knew God wanted me to learn a new lesson. I could not complain, but only praise Him.

I continued to praise and thank God from my heart. My pain continued until the evening. Many brothers and sisters were around me and prayed for me. Suddenly I began to vomit and two sisters got their skirts soiled in the process. I was in agony and they prayed for me again. Whenever someone asked me something, I would just nod or shake my head. I would open my eyes and close them immediately. Finally, after a long while, the pain left and I was able to sleep until daybreak. Praise God! Then on Saturday, April 29, I had a good rest because I had no pain the night before.  However, at midnight, once again I could not urinate because the catheter had fallen out. Then Madam Yeung said: “We had better go to the Second Peoples Hospital of Guangzhou, which was a Christian Hospital.”

About 10: 00 a.m. we went there by two taxis. Our taxi drove first and Madam Yeung sat in front while one brother and one sister sat with me in the back. On the way to the hospital we discovered that the driver drove us the wrong way around city.  He took us to Yuen Zhang Road and then around to Yurhenchi Road to the Second Chong Shan Hospital. Madam Yeung said: “We do not want to go to Yurhenchi but to Rochi, not to the second Chong Shan Hospital but the Second Guangzhou Hospital.” Maybe he took a long distance to earn more money. Normally, we have to pay him more if the driver drove this way. But it was terrible that the driver took so long when my stomach was about to burst.

At last the driver took us to the right hospital, but on the way there was a traffic jam on Yurhenchi Road. Oh! First around the city, and then a traffic jam! I would have died if God had not taken pity on me. The other taxi had already arrived when we reached the hospital. They didn’t know why we had not arrived yet, so they went around looking for us. As I got out of the taxi I asked Madam Yeung to tell the doctor to help me right away. That was the first time I had ever entered the consulting room by wheelchair. When the doctor asked me to choose whether or not I wanted to have the operation¼¼I didn’t understand why he asked me because I felt that that was his decision. I said: “If it is necessary, please do it.”  So he had a catheter inserted and sent me to 103 surgical ward.  The bed of a patient who had just left the hospital was for me. I discharged one bag of urine. After a while I filled a second bag and this was a relief. However, because the catheter had had to be inserted twice, I felt awful. I also discovered some blood and pus in the urine, and my bed got wet. So I had to use some chux pads.

Someone said: “You are just 5 years old, not 65. So that your renewed youth is like the eagles (strong, overcoming, soaring)!”  Psalm 103: 5. Because I used the chux pads, I am rejuvenating in my old age. Many brothers and sisters were concerned for me.

Doctor David Wong helped me a lot. These events occurred on Sunday, so brother Liu preached instead of me. I spoke to brother Yong about prayers and announcements after the meeting.  I said: “Tell them that I have fallen sick and that I told them that there is no need to visit me, but just pray for me. If you don’t announce it, many people will think that I had disappeared or been arrested again.” My chux pads got wet while I was sleeping because my catheter had fallen off again. Changing my clothes at midnight made visiting time a bit difficult because of the lost slee#p.  Also, I had not urinated or had a bowel movement for two days.  My bed was all wet and my belly was in agony. Then, at midnight, I asked brother Chan to call the nurse. Fifteen minutes later she still had not come. I asked brother Chan to call her again. Fifteen minutes more passed, and still she had not come. At 12: 30 we called her the third time. This time she came and said: “Let me check it first.” Another 15 minutes passed and my belly was in great pain. Then she called me to the consulting room. However, the pain was so great that I couldn’t bear it any longer, and so I went to the toilet to vomit before proceeding to the consulting room.

In the consulting room a third catheter was inserted. The bag was filled with urine very quickly and I felt much better. After I went back to my ward, I had a bowel movement. At first it could hardly come out, after that it came out much more easily. I had not had a bowel movement for 2 days, but now they had returned to normal. Praise God! He gave me a chance to learn some lessons and taught me to thank Him and praise Him from my heart in the midst of suffering. David was scolded by Shimei the son of Gera and he cast stones at him. Abishai couldn’t bear it and he said to the King: “Let me go over and take off his head.” David just said: “Let him alone and let him curse; for Jehovah has bidden him.” (2 Samuel 16: 11) I thought what happened to me today was not from man but from God. God let the driver take a much longer route.  The traffic jam also came from God. He caused the nurse to delay her coming to me time after time. “It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day.” (2 Samuel 16:12) If that is the case, I will be pleased and full of joy at the time of my receiving His blessing. On April 30 (Sunday), a brother in the washing department in that hospital came to visit me and brought a lot of chux pads to me. Soon my catheter fell off again. This time I tried to urinate without the catheter. I could do that slowly, but there was some pain, as well as some blood and pus in the urine.

The doctors said that my pain would probably last for another week because of the infection. The day was May 1, a Monday, and it was a holiday, many brothers and sisters came to visit me even though we had announced there was no need. Someone searched a few hospitals to find me. Some came from the East of Guangzhou to the West. Others even looked for me at every big hospital. How sweet the love of the Lord is as demonstrated through brothers and sisters! Brother Liu said: “Your assistants are doing a very good job. They demonstrate good cooperation and that is good practice. Everyone has been responsible in their work while you were absent. Don’t worry about anything.”

I received the love of many brothers and sisters. The Christian students in Jinan University wrote a card to me expressing their care and concern for my well-being. Through this (and other) things I realized that their love for me was greater than my love for them. A brother said that he just felt as if he had lost something when he couldn’t see me. A sister said: “When I couldn’t meet you at the church, my feeling was like that which Mary must have felt when she went to the tomb and couldn’t see the Lord.” This made me feel both joy and shame. I also got a letter from Hong Kong that gave me much encouragement. I will include the contents of that letter here as I believe it may help those Christians in suffering for our Lord.

May 2, 1989

Dear Uncle Lamb,

Paul’s suffering always reminds us that we should prepare to suffer for our Lord. His words are very encouraging. “We are treated as unknown and ignored by the world. We are well known and recognized by God and His people as dying; and yet here we are alive; as disciplined by suffering and yet not killed. We are sorrowful, and yet always rejoicing; we are ourselves poor, and yet we bestow riches on many. We are as having nothing, and yet in reality possessing all things.” (2 Cor. 6: 9-10) The situation that the poet described in Psalm 73 was not just for that moment. Isn’t it just like this age? “For I envied the foolish and arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They set their mouth against the heavens with blasphemy, and their tongue smeared the earth with slanders.” Psalm 73: 3, 9. Then the poet said: “When I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.” Psalm 73:17. Then their thinking changed, and they had hope from God.

Please take a good rest and get nourishment to regain your health. This is also another matter of service to God……letting your body recuperate. I am sure that many brothers and sisers are praying for you to get more strength and continue rejoicing in the Lord.

Yours in Christ

It was Tuesday, May 2. Even though the doctor just said (yesterday) that my pain would last another week, there was no denying that the pain was gone. Praise God it only lasted 2 days……this was God’s mercy on me. The doctor said: “You may take ultrasonic therapy this time tomorrow and Friday take an X-RAY of the kidney.” If we followed that course of action, I could not leave the hospital, but in fact I left the hospital on Friday and caught the Sunday service. Why was that unusual? In order to take this X-RAY I had to take a laxative, but I didn’t know it was laxative. I asked the doctor if it was necessary for me to take an X-RAY before I could use the rest room. He said: “Before taking this X-RAY your intesines must be empty. That’s why the nurse gave you the laxative. However, since we have given you the laxative, tomorrow you can have the X-RAY taken.” Praise God. The plan was to have the ultrasound done on the 3rd and take the X-RAY on the 5th. However, since they had given me the laxative earlier, everything would be done the following day (the 3rd). That was God’s good will towards me.

On May 3 (a Wednesday), they had just planned to do my ultra-sound, but since I had the laxative they were able to take an X-RAY and give me an EKG (electrocardiogram) as well. This was God’s will. I was very tired, so that night I went to bed early. I slept from 11:00 #p.m. until 4: 00 a.m. when I woke up and was unable to sleep any longer. So I started praying……asking God to cause me not to nooe an operation and to allow me to be in attendance at the Sunday service. On Thursday, May 4 I got the results from the X-RAY. First, there was a kidney stone at the exit to the lower part of the left artery. Second, the kidney stone was very obscure. The efficiency of the kidney was not very good. Third, the prostate gland was a little bigger than normal. I slept for a few hours at noon since I woke up so early. In the afternoon the doctor informed me that I could leave the next day. He said: “You may use some Chinese medicine to help you recuperate.” Two other men in my room had had operations. However, as of yet, they had not left the hospital. I said: “I am the last in but I will leave first.” They said: “How wonderful your Jesus is.” I was allowed to leave the hospital on May 5. The doctor said I could leave at 4:00 a.m. When I entered the hospital they said I would stay for three weeks, but I only stayed for about a week (from April 29 to May 5, Saturday to Friday). How great was His grace to me! That night I only slept for four and a half hours. These were my experiences of God’s grace while staying in the hospital.

Now I want to talk about God’s grace and how He worked through me during my stay in the hospital. Although the time was not very long, I received a full measure of His grace and teaching during that time. Firstly, I shared with the other patients. There were two patients in my room, Wu Re Ling and Fong Quan Chang. When I entered the sick room, Wu Re Ling thought that he had met me somewhere and asked me if I had lived in Damazhan. I said: “Yes, that’s right.” He responded: “My cousin in Hong Kong took me to Damazhan one time.” I said: “God wants me to look for the lost shee#p.” Fong Quan Chang is a teacher and we had many good conversations. Many brothers and sisters shared the Gospel with them. The brothers and sisters expected that they would eventually come to accept Christ.

Secondly I shared with doctors. Every Christian should look for lost sheep when they enter the hospital. This time God not only let me share with patients but also with doctors. During those days some doctors came to me and asked me some questions about the Bible. They did not just ask questions, but they also asked for Bibles. So I gave them my Bible, some spiritual books and tracts as well. They said they would join our services. I mentioned those doctors in my testimony when we had a meeting one night. Two of them brought two more to our church. They laughed after they heard me mention them and said some more would come soon.

Thirdly, God provided the opportunity for me to minister and preach at Rogi Hospital in 1947. The doctors in the Rogi Hospital asked me to preach there in 1947. The Rogi Hospital’s name was changed to the “Second People’s Hospital” after the Liberation in 1949. At that time, pulmonary tuberculosis was just like cancer today. The possibility of infection was great. The doctors put on their gauze mask when they entered the sick room. If I was to preach, how could I put on a gauze mask? So, I depended on the Lord and preached in the pulmonary tuberculosis room. Praise God. He allowed me to minister to those patients and protected me against contracting Tuberculosis. This time I stayed at Rogi Hospital, I remembered what happened in that year. It was a happy memory.

Fourthly, I had not entered the hospital for 60 years. One day a nurse came and asked me: “Bed number one, how are you?” I said: “My bed is fine. It is just a little bit wet.” The sister said, “She is asking you, not asking how the bed is. Bed number one means you.” The nurse laughed also. This situation proved that I had not had any experience in staying in hospital.

Fifthly, God let me suffer. In these 10 or 20 years God let me have many experiences in suffering, but I seldom had any suffering because of disease or illness in 1982. I now had a serious case of kidney stones. After I had an injection, I felt better. When I was 5 years old, I stayed in the hospital, but I cannot really remember that suffering because it happened so long ago (60 years). This time God let me have this suffering so that I could comfort and sympathize with others who are suffering.

Sixthly, I read the book called “Queen of the Dark Chamber.” I had this book for a long time. Since I was busy, I never read it. I brought this book with me when I entered the hospital and prepared to read it carefully. However, I did not have enough time to read it all. So I just asked to read a portion of it. It gave me a lot of help and I think it also can help other Christians in suffering. Dr. Billy Graham wrote an article that recommended the book “Queen of the Dark Chamber.” The other book that he recommended was the “Visitation of the Queen of the Dark Chamber.” What these books had to share would make us share something.

Concerning “Queen of the Dark Chamber,” her name was Christiana Chai. She was a person in the palace in the Ching Dynasty. After she believed in the Lord, her family laughed at her and discarded her. But later, 55 people in her clan believed in Christ. When her illness was at a very serious stage, no medicine could cure her. The doctor said she would die within 3 days. They asked her family to prepare a coffin and funeral affairs for her. The amazing Lord God Almighty made her live for more than 30 years. In those 30 years, she stayed in the darkness. Whenever she saw any significantly bright light, it caused a sharp pain (like a knife) in her eyes. She was only able to read in a very dimly little room. When she had a good meal, she would vomit it back u#p. When she had the disease, her body seemed as if it was burning with fire.

Although it was winter, she felt it was as hot as in the summer. Her fingers were torn, and one could see the bones. She had pain in her heart. She felt that to die was better than to suffer alive, but she had the lesson of how to depend on Him. She walked through the “valley of the shadow of death” peacefully while she was suffering and was tempted for a long time. She had never doubted God’s mercy and grace nor had she ever asked the Lord, “Why do You treat me this way?” Instead she asked the Lord, “What shall I do for you?” I experienced much suffering, but my pain in suffering was less than hers. I got a lot of help and comfort from her suffering and learned a lot of lessons. God let me suffer and helped me to learn how to thank Him and praise Him through those events. I remembered what someone said: “If an unbeliever enjoys his wealth in his whole life, all will be offset in hell within half an hour after he dies. If a Christian suffers for the Lord in his whole life, all will be offset within half an hour in heaven.”

If a Christian loves the world and his friends, and he hasn’t any suffering in his life (or when the suffering comes, he complains a lot) he has a cold heart toward the Lord. He no longer has fellowship with Christ and no longer serves Christ as Lord. For such a man, all the riches he had in the world would be offet within half an hour after the judgment in the air. “If a person’s work is burned up under the test of fire, he will suffer the loss of it all, though he himself will be saved, but only as one who has passed through the flames.” (1 Cor. 3:15) I expect these words can give us more encouragement. May God bless you.

In closing I want to talk about something that happened in 1989. I took no part in the recent student demonstration even though I was called upon to do so, because my priority is not to become involved in politics, but to preach the Gospel. Another reason I took no part in the recent student demonstration was because we (as Christians) should obey the government except when it involves matters of faith. We have freedom to believe and preach the Gospel until now.

On August 6 at 3: 00 a.m. my kidney stones became very painful again. So I went to a nearby hospital and received an injection, but it gave no relief. However, as it was a Sunday, I had to preach that morning……but the pain didn’t go away. However, when I stood up to preach, the pain went away until I finished, and then it came back again. I spent that Sunday afternoon in bed. That evening at 6:00 #p.m. I had to attend the “break bread” servce. Still suffering from the pain of that stone all afternoon, when the time came for me to preside over the service, the pain went away again. This time the pain would stay away until August 10. The reason for this was on August 8 I baptised 169 people. This was our 45th baptism and it was done in two sessions. The baptisms were from 10: 00 a.m. until 1: 00 #p.m. where 106 people were baptised, and then 7: 00 #p.m. to 10: 00 #p.m. where 63 people were baptised. On August 10, when the pain returned, I went to Gongrhen Hospital for an X-RAY. After the X-RAY the doctor turned me back the wrong way by mistake, and I fell off on to my head, but I suffered no new effects. Praise the Lord.

I was invited to participate in Lausanne in Manila International Congress on World Evangelization, July 11-20, 1989. But I hadn’t gone.

1. Confiscation

New Wave of Persecution in China

1. House Search

On February 22, 1990, (Thursday) at 11:30 #p.m. when the after church fellowship had finished and everyone had left (including two foreign Christians who left last), four women came up to the third floor. (They were the people who had previously talked to me to try to make me register with the Three Self and China Christian Council.) After talking for a few minutes, one of them went down-stairs, and 50-60 police-men rushed up-stairs. The other three then left. It was like an occupation army. The person in charge produced his search warrant and ordered me to countersign it. They ordered me to open all the cupboards and they forced open those without keys. Three men went everywhere video taping. All of the Christian books, the Bibles from overseas, several thousand of our stenciled tracts and 3,000 copies of our six different hymnbooks were all taken away. In addition, they confiscated ten tape recorders, our closed circuit TV, amplifiers, several microphones, ten thousand tapes (both blank and recorded), an electronic organ, a generator, and our mimeographing machines. They even took our telephone (which was later returned) and all of our money. Later they returned my personal money. Finally, they took the Bible, pen, and photograph (sent to me by president Reagan), as well as the Bible and pen given me by Billy Graham. This was some “house search” !

2. Took me to the reception room

This search lasted until 4: 00 a.m. on the twenty-third. At that time they produced an “arrest warrant” and asked me to sign it. After signing, they told me to bring some clothes, a towel and a tooth brush, and took me to the reception room on Huanghua Road. They interrogated me there for more than 20 hours during which I only slept for about 10 minutes, sitting in a chair and leaning my head against the wall. I was cold and I couldn’t sleep, but I had no headaches. I didn’t sleep for 25 hours including the time taken for the house-search.

3. They interrogated me as follows

They said that as we had not registered, we had disobeyed Document 44 of Guangdong province. Therefore, they were forcing us to close the Damazhan meeting point. I said: “We did not take part in the (student) demonstrations, in fact I told the believers not to take part. You should not be concerned about us. They said: “We are concerned about you. We’re not talking about the demonstrations. We are saying you have disobeyed government policy.”

I said: “But the policy does not forbid home-meetings. In the people’s Daily on January 27, 1983, as well in Document 19 ( the most important Communist party Document on religion issued in 1982 ) it is stated that home-meetings are legal. In the People’s Daily of September 14, 1989, Wang Zhen said that there was no change in the policy of freedom of religious belief. People’s Daily of January 21, 1990, said that in some areas religion was being attacked under the pretext of attacking pornography and the ‘Six Evils’. Then this situation should be critcized and rectified. On January 25, 1990, The People’s Daily said there should be no wrongful arrests or house-searches. They said that people should not be forced to believe in religion (or not to believe in religion) or to join a particular sect.

We did not demonstrate, but (Bishop) Ding Guangxun ( head of the official Protestant Church ) supported the student demonstrations. Recently when Hong Zhenshi died, Ding Guangxun was promoted to Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee. They said that Bishop Ding had made a good self-criticism (fansi). I said: “We don’t need to make one, as we didn’t take part. But the Nanjing Seminary took part in the demonstration. They are not in trouble now, but we are the ones who are closed down. We do not oppose the government, nor did we demonstrate.” For a long time the government has had nothing against us. Long ago I expected that this would happen someday, and yet I hoped against hope that it would not.

They said: “why don’t you cooperate with the Three Self? Don’t say that you are genuine and they are false!” Then I said: “It’s not that they are all false. They include both genuine and false Christians. But we don’t wish to worship with this mixture of true and false.” I told them that if we registered we would have to join the Three Self and China Christian Council and be controlled by them. So registration is an indirect way of forcing us to join the Three Self. There is nothing about this in the Constitution. It was not until 1988 that Guangdong promulgated registration. They would do better to concentrate on public order than on religion. They said: “We must concentrate on everything.” Sometimes I did not answer their questions and the recorder wrote “remained silent”.

I said: “There is no such thing as the Three Self in any other country in the world throughout history. However, when it was originally set up (in the fifties), people were free to join or not to join.”

4. Our support

They believed that I was reliant on funds from overseas, thus transgressing the “Three Self principles” (self-support, self-government, self-propagation) and that if we had no foreign aid our church could not support itself.

I said: “We have no regular support from Hong Kong or overseas. When foreigners attend, sometimes they contribute. But the Three Self Churches do the same. They even go begging for money from foreigners. Every week we have about 1,000 Christians meeting here and are able to support the church expenses. Some people from overseas had asked us to make Gospel tapes to send to people who want them. This we had agreed to without asking for their monetary support because we do everything for the benefit of the Gospel. They do not interfere in our ‘self-government’, we just cooperate, that’s all”. They said that we have foreingners come to preach. I responded: “I preach, and individual foreigners may give testimony, encouragement, or pass on greetings after the sermon. This is true fellowshi#p.”

They asked why we brought in Bibles and books from overseas. I said: “The Bibles from overseas are exactly the same as the Bibles printed in China. During the Cultural Revolution all the Bibles were confiscated, so preachers and believers need Christian books because they are the accumulated wisdom of over a thousand years. With these books, we can resist heresies. Why do you call this ‘infiltration’ while you call the importation of science, technology, English and literature from overseas cultural exchange?”

The tape-recorders, loud-speakers, and etc. Were all for preaching the Gospel. After they sent them in, they did not interfere with our “self-government.”

5. They asked me about God and Jesus

They asked me if there really is a God and whether Jesus truly rose again. I said that God truly exists and that Jesus did actually rise again. This is the good news of Salvation. I shared the Gospel with them, and then my testimony, and my father’s testimony. They said: “Perhaps you do not really believe that Jesus rose again. Some Three Self pastors say, ‘All this talk of the resurrection is not necessarily true.’” I responded by saying: “Just now I said that there were both true and false Christians in the Three Self Church, but you told me not to say I was right and they were wrong. Now out of your own mouth you have given proof that there are false believers and false leaders in the Three Self Church. If I did not believe that Jesus truly rose again, I would have discarded this dead Jesus when I was first arrested in the mid-fifties, if not sooner (before I was arrested). But after I was arrested twice, my faith was not only strengthened, but I proclaimed the risen Christ, because He is alive. We believe and know that we are now saved and that in the future we shall go to Heaven.”

They said: “Man is snuffed out like a candle. You would do better to live to a ripe old age. You believe there’s a God. But where was He when we summoned you yesterday evening?” I replied: “God allowed this to happen.” They said: “What’s this? If we hadn’t summoned you, you wouldn’t have come, would you?”

They gave me 150 grams of rice, but I said 100 was sufficient. I prayed, but they commanded me to eat. I said: “I would like to pray first.” Then they said: “OK.”

6. Finally, they ordered me to sign the following statement

I agree to all of the following:

(1)To obey the government closure of Damazhan meeting-point.

(2) Not to do anything against the government or the people. ( They wanted me to write ‘not do anything AGAIN’, but I simply wrote ‘not do anything’ ).

(3) To come immediately when they summoned me. This was a form of house-arrest rather than mere surveillance.

I said I could not stop my activities and that was they who were banning us, and that I was only paying lip-service, not obeying them from the heart. They asked me to sign a confession but I refused. I told them that I had not disobeyed the law, only the Guangdong document.

7. February 24, 1990 ( Saturday )

At 12: 40 a.m. they sent me by car. Altogether I had been under arrest for 21 hours. When I got back, the place was a complete mess, with the floor covered with cigarette butts. I did not sleep until 2: 00 a.m. The next day Christians came to visit me. The first was Uncle Zhu who had hidden Christian books ( during the Cultural Revolution ) and had been so faithful. Everyone helped to clean up and by noon the place was clean again.

Praise God: “Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Jehovah ! ” ( Job 1: 21 )

We do not blame anyone. God had already ordained this day before the creation of the world. We must thank and praise Him!

That (Sunday) evening many Christians came, but there was no meeting. People stood outside and prayed, and some wept.

This testing is God’s “winnowing out the tares”. Satan wishes to destroy the grain, but God shall preserve his people.

8. American Consul & British reporter interviewed with me

On the morning of Sunday, February 25, 1990, the American Consul David Keegan came from the Dongfang Hotel to see me. On 4 March (Sunday) a reporter from the British Independent came. I told them that they must not distort the facts.

2. Religion Church Notes

Local Author Writes About Chinese pastor

The lead article in the August 1991 Reader’s Digest features Pastor Samuel Lamb of Guangzhou, China, as an example of the House Church Movement in that communist country. The pastor, whose Chinese name used in the Digest is Lin Xiangao, is known to Westerners by his Christian name.

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Anderson of 720 North Lake Street in Warsaw were with the pastor in June. They presented him copies of his short biography, “Bold as a Lamb” written by Ken Anderson and published by Zondervan.

Pastor Lamb spent twenty years in prison, fifteen of them in a coal mine, for allegedly being a counter-revolutionary. He is under continual police surveillance, and yet he ministers to over a thousand parishioners each week. The Andersons made four trips to Guangzhou gathering data for the book.

The Notice of the people’s Government of

Yue Xiu District, Guangzhou City

Yue-Government Document Reference ( 1990 ) 7

According to investigations, Lin Xian Gao conducted illegal religious activities on the second and third floors of 35 Da Ma Zhan over a long period of time. After the people’s Government of Guangdong province promulgated the Guangdong province Religious Activity Places, Administration, and Management Regulation in May 1988, relevant Government departments have educated Lin Xian Gao multiple times. However, Lin still refused to apply to the Government religious department for registration, and continued to undertake his illegal religious activites, violating Government laws and Regulations.

Please notice that, in accordance with the Guangdong Province Religious Activity Places, Administration, and Management Regulation, it is now resolutely banned.

Book 2

After Confiscation

Chapter 1 Summon for Interrogations

Mar. 13, 1990, #p.m. two people came, asking me to register.  I did not accept.

Summon for interrogations

1. 1990

Besides the one dated Feb. 22 to 23, 1990, there were the following interrogations:

The 1st interrogation: Feb. 28, 1990. Two times in the reception room (of PBS) at Huanghua Road, both morning and afternoon. They asked me to pay back my meal during the previous interrogation, amounted to 2.5 yuens.

The 2nd interrogation: Mar. 10, 1990.

The 3rd interrogation: Mar. 24, 1990.

The 4th interrogation: Apr. 7, 1990. I asked them: “All the local Residents' Committees are looking for Christians everywhere, saying I am arrested. If the roomer spreads around, would it be counted as yours, or mine? ”

The 5th interrogation: Apr. 10, 1990. They wanted to take away the pendent fans, electric generators, steel folding chairs, exhaust fans and rubber baptising pool. April 16, they asked me by telephone to talk to them in the afternoon. Before long, another telephone call said I had no need to go.

The 6th interrogation: July 6, 1990. They asked about the Life Journal saying I was sentenced to death. I answered: “I have heard this rumor many times: the first time was on June 21, an Australian John Short brother in Hong Kong said I was sentenced to death. June 27, a pastor from America said the same to me. June 28, a brother called me from Europe, asking if I was sentenced to death. July 3, Consul Daniel A. Hutches from the American Consulate General in Guangzhou visited, along with Evan A. Feigenbaum of the Political Section.  They also said the same words. I told them that it was a rumor.  I also said I was told on June 11 that someone was “falsely saying all kinds of evil against me.”

The 7th interrogation: Aug. 15, 1990, from 3 to 5 #p. m.  When I came back home, there were several foreign brothers waiting for me. I conversed with them for a moment, I hurried my supper after they left. Then, I performed a wedding. This was the first wedding service after the closure. Several foreign Christians also attended.

The 8th interrogation: Oct. 31, 1990. I was asked if any one visited, especially those well-known, and what their response was. After I replied, I said: “Why did you take away even souvenirs sent by Ex-President Reagan? ”

They (TS#p.) asked: “Do you want to take back these things? ” I said: “That's not what I meant. You asked me what they said, and I just told you their words. That's all.” I said: “ You asked me to register, to come under the control of the two Councils (i. e. TS#p.: 'Chinese Christianity Three Self Patriotic Movement Committee' and CC: 'Chinese Christianity Council'). But TS#p. is the tool of diminishing Christianity. If we are not controlled by foreign Christians, but, on the contrary, we have to be controlled by native non-Christians. How can it be self-government (of the Church) ? We obey the law, and did not participate in the (students') demonstrations. If it clashes with the Bible, we are obedient to God. ”

They asked me to preach in a big (TS#p.) church. I said: “we could not mix with monks.” They said: “you obey only foreigner's words, but not the words of natives.” I said: “ I did not obey foreigners' direction. At the present days of (Chinese) open-up to the outer world, they came over to enjoy fellowship with me, not to control me.”

Oct. 5, someone called me from overseas, asking if I would be executed during these days.

The 9 th interrogation: Dec. 14, 1990, from 8: 30 #p.m. to 10:30 #p.m. This time, they asked me again who had visited recently.

After I answered them, I also said: “ I can lodge an appeal, and have a dialogue (with you), and ask reporters to attend. Can I go to law against the officials as a citizen? ” They said: “ Yes. ” I said: “I won't do this.” When Jesus was arrested, He did not ask His Father to send more than twelve legions of angels (Mt. 26: 53).

After the summon, at 10: 30, they had 30 people to take away 9 pendent fans and 2 wall fans from my house, as well as 2 electric generators, and 6 big batteries (all these things were registered before but not taken away then), other things were not confiscated. At the same time, they returned to me gifts like the pens given by Reagan, Billy Graham, and the American Congress letter opener given to me by Ex-President Bush's trusted fellow Cox, also an electronic keyboard, an electric saw, an electric drill and an electric planer. In addition, they returned back 350 yuans Government bond and a thousand deposited here by an old widow. They cameraed again our stenciled hymn books.

The 10th interrogation: Jan. 22, 1991. This time they mainly took back the temporary and exchanged it with a formal receipt of confiscated belongings. After interrogation, some-times they said: “Do not do it again, you should care about the consequences.” But sometimes they called me “ Uncle Lin ”.

“ We went through fire and through water ”( Ps. 66:12).

2. 1991

On May 10, 1991, the Government of Yue Xiu District summoned many Christians for a meeting, asked them not to come here for meeting, and introduced them to meet at other places ( TSPM Churches ). They said, they would educate me again.

One doctor said, as they were asked to speak during the meeting, “ If I went to other places, I fell aslee#p. But Biblical truth is spoken here, and I can understand it much better.  Recently I also helped the handicapped people. Since I believe in Jesus, I am willing to do so. ”

Another sister said: “ My son died in a traffic several years ago. Someone told me to believe in Jesus, I went to Damazhan to hear the Gospel, and accepted the Lord. Right now I am very joyful, and I won't go to other places.” Several people raised their hands to speak, but they were told the meeting was over for time was u#p.

On Sept. 13, two women came and asked me to study the No. 6 Document of Beijing.

On Sept. 25, 11 to 12 a.m., 13 Guangzhou City Congress representatives came to talk with me about the issue of registration. I said, if we registered, we would be  turned under control of TSPM. Someone said it was not a matter of “ control ”, but “ guidance ”. Their attitude was not so bad.

On Oct. 4, a rumour spread out that the whole city agreed to take action against us.

Nov. 1, five people from the Department of Religious Affairs ( DORA ) and Yue Xiu District came to talk with me about registration. I said: “Do not think we are the same because of what happened in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. No matter in any country politics is mixed with pure Christianity, we did not participate in the June 4th Demonstration of 1989. It proves that we are not the kind mixing politics.”

Someone said: “I heard you talking about this three times already.” I said: “I will speak more of it, because it is an iron truth that we did not participate in the Demonstration.” I said also: “ Your Residents' Committees of different streets went all around telling Christians not to come here for the meeting.  There are also some units who threaten that if Christians go to the Damazhan Church, they will lose their monthly bonus.”

I pointed out, “ This is each unit taking this opportunity to threaten us.” They said: “We did not tell them not to give bonus, etc., but we did tell them not to go there for the meeting. And we will tell them the same thing in the future.”

In the evening, 5 PSB came along with those from the Yue Xiu District Government, but their attitude was not so good as that of the DORA.

On Dec. 15, documents were read in the same ( TSPM ) churches, saying that they would take actions against us next year.

We have experienced more trials in 1992. Although we are weak, God is faithful. He did not forsake us, but rather sustained us with much greater grace. The name of the Lord shall be praised!

3. Constantly being tested (1992)

It is not a good thing to live without trials. When the trials come, it is a good opportunity for us trust in the Lord. And God brings us through one and another, which is His own work.

Five interrogations

From Mar. 17 to Apr. 10, 1992, I was asked to go to be interrogated for five times within one month. It was the most frequent month, as I was never so intensely interrogated.

The 1st interrogation:

On Mar. 17, 1992 afternoon, the Religious Affairs ( DORA ) asked me for a talk concerning “ registration”, “ Three Self ” etc.

I said: “We are submissive to the Government to pay taxes, provide disasters relief, and pay safeguard fees, etc. But our belief should not mix with that of the nonbelievers.” They mentioned about No. 44 Document of Guangdong province, and asked us to register.

I said: “Both Chinese People's White Paper dated Nov. 4,1991 and the Constitution did not specify that house church should be subject to registration. Although the White Paper does not refer to the house church, it says 'religious citizens have the right to organize religious activities', which means house church is legal. We take the Bible as our standard. We prefer martyrdom. Ding Guang Shun (the national Bishop) once said TSP (Chinese Christianity Three Self Patriotic Movement Committee) would be banned in 1990.”

They asked: “ Have you read Ding Guang Shun's recent confession ”, which meant he had already his positions? I said: “Jesus asked us to guard false prophets.”

One of their pastors said Jesus did not refuse Pharisees, and that Paul also studied under Gamaliel, I said: “ Phariseesm was not only one of the denominations; not all the Pharisees were hypocritical. Jesus only rebuked their falseness. Paul himself had been a Pharisee.”

He said again: “Abraham did not refuse Lot, but rescued Lot.” I said: “ Lot was not a nonbeliever, he was only a carnal believer.”

The 2nd interrogation:

On Mar. 24, 1992, 4 to 6 #p.m. one PSB asked me to go to the local police station for a talk. Finally, they asked about four foreigners who brought us ten bags of spiritual books on the night of the 23rd. Then, they came to take away all of them (approx. 250 kg).

The 3rd interrogation:

On Mar. 28, the DORA asked me for a talk; again it was about the matter of registration. They said: “A grand religion law will be issued this year or next. At that moment, administrative disciplines will be executed.”

“Both the Constitution and the White Paper do not mention about registration.” I answered: “On the contrary, they state that house church is legal.” They answered: “House church refers to the worship of one family.” I said: “All over the world, house church does not mean one family. The house churches in the Bible aren't either just members of one family. At Pentecost there were 120 people meeting at Mark's Building. How could it be just one family? At most I will die a martyr.”

They said: “The TSP does not give any guidance for the belief, but only emphasizes the self-governing of the church.” I replied: “We are already self-managing our church now. We are not manipulated by any foreign countries or anybody from afar.  One of TSP pastors said it is out of fashion for Paul to say ‘be prepared in season and out of season’ now.”

“It must be hearsay”, they said: “We have checked our files; nothing was said that you were a Rightist. It was the South China Daily that made a mistake.” I said: “I was denounced as a Rightist at first. Then I was charged as a counterrevolutionary and was arrested right after.”

“It might be a mistake during the Cultural Revolution,” they said: “you are quite doubtful to our policy. You are controlled by Imperialists. At the early stage of Imperialism, they invaded China through religion.”

I said: “I am not controlled by any Imperialists in the past, as we are not allowed to allocate the mistakes of the Cultural Revolution as that of the present matters.”

The 4th interrogation:

Apr. 3, 9 to 11 a.m., seven people of DORA talked with me.  Once again, they pressed me to register and be controlled by TS#p. “Otherwise”, they threatened: “it will be illegal, and you will be banned. You registered in the fifties.” I answered: “At that moment, we only registered as a church, but we did not join the TS#p. ”

They accused us of smuggling Bibles from overseas. I said: “Bibles don't require taxes to be paid, how could it be smuggling? Other science and technology books are not forbidden, but only spiritual books are forbidden. It is also not allowed us to preach Gospel in other areas. But Bible tells us to go to preach the Gospel all over the world.”

They said: “Don't set the Bible as the highest standard.  Also you cannot quote from the Constitution or the White Paper.  It is only a general law. Actual implementations are subject to specific documents, which are established by different provinces.”

I said: “The Bible is the highest standard. Whether or not to be registered is not minor matters, but constitutional. Not even one word was said in the Constitution or the White Paper concerning any compulsory registration of the house church. ”

The 5th interrogation:

Apr. 10, 9 to 11: 30 a.m. I was brought to the Bureau of Religious Affairs to talk again about the matter of registration.  They read to me a document from “central authority ”.

I said: “Ding Guang Shun supported the students' demon-stration. ” They answered: “No”. I pointed out: “If somebody (from TSP) is sent to stay assembly place, it is not self-governing of the church.” They said: “It is only an ‘assistance’, not an ‘interference’. ”

I said: “At a certain church, it requires the approval of the cadres to spend 50 yuans.” They asked where it happened, and they said there wasn't such a thing. They said: “It is very good of you to point out these problems. It also helps our work. ”

I said again: “Birth control was preached at Tai Cheng Church. ” They said: “It might be a metaphor in the sermon.” I said: “It was the theme, and the audience burst into an uproar.”

“We do not necessarily request you to join the TSP, but only ask for your registration to be guided by the TSP, not to guide your belief, but to guide you how to self-govern the church,” said they. I said: “We have already realized self-management.”

Ever since the talk dated Apr. 10, they did not ask me to be interrogated. All the Christians were told not to go to meet at Church by cadres at grass-roots level.

On Oct. 19, one of my co-worker's house was raided.  Around more that 15,000 Bibles and spiritual books were confiscated.

On Dec. 16, at 3 #p.m., several workers were searched in a factory. Since they often came here for the meetings, even their baptismal pictures and Identification Cards were taken away.  Three of them were brought to be interrogated and were asked not to go to meet at Damazhan. One sister said: “When I go to meet there (as an outcome), my life has been changed.” They said: “Do you know it is illegal ? ” She said: “I am ready to stay here from tonight.”

4. June 3rd questioning (1993)

During the period of Mar. 17 to Apr. 10, 1992, I was questioned five times.

After this period of time, I was not questioned for 14 months.

On the morning of Jun. 3, 1993, ( Thursday ) from 8 : 45 to 11: 00, four PSB officials talked with me. They began by saying that the Damazhan service is illegal. I replied: “ Bishop Ding said: ‘Not allowing worship is outlaw ’.”

The #p.S.B. said that I should not have children Sunday School. If a child is under the age of eighteen, he cannot be exposed to any religious teachings. I replied: “The Chinese Government and #p.S.B. expose underaged children to Marxism-Leninism ideas and teachings.” The #p.S.B. claimed that is not true.

In reference to the period of Mar. 17 1992 to Apr. 10, 1992, the PSB claimed that information I gave outside sources was becoming more inaccurate, e.g. overseas reports stated that I was questioned 23 hours, some even stated 25 hours, when it was actually 21 hours. I replied: “I have always said 21 hours.  When others said 23 or 25 hours, I corrected their mistake.  When others say 23 or 25, it is not my responsibility.”

The #p.S.B. asked who supported me and Damazhan, I said: “It is supported by God through the congregation of Damazhan.  Even though foreigners come and give donations, they are not supporters. ”

The #p.S.B. asked why Damazhan sent people to Yingde to spread the Gospel and why they asked people including some sick people to fast and they died. I replied: “Some people who went to do it out of their own initiative and were not sent by Damazhan. We did not tell sick people to fast. In Yingde, a heresy has appeared. This heresy believed that Jesus is old and He is not the King of kings. They also tell people to believe in two women who are the king of kings because Jesus is getting old. People started to accept this heresy so some people went to Yingde to correct their mistake. They are correct in doing that.”

The #p.S.B. said that Damazhan had printed a lot of books and those books can be found in garbage piles. I said: “If 100 books were printed and as a result only one person come to know Jesus, it is worth it.”

The #p.S.B. said that the Damazhan Sunday service is too loud. I said that the Sunday service used to start at 2: 00 #p.m., but some newspaper said that the time of 12: 00 #p.m.-2: 30 #p.m. should be a time of silence. So in order to appease the Government, we moved it to 8: 30 a.m. to 11: 00 a.m. The singing occurs for half an hour only. Behind Damazhan, there are some clothing shops and their radios blare from morning till night and nothing is done about that. What kind of reasoning are that?

The #p.S.B. demanded Damazhan obey the Government.  I said: “Damazhan obeyed the Government when they did not demonstrate on Jun. 4, 1989 and they do not plan on demonstrating to morrow (June 4) again.” The PSB asked: “ If Americans tell you to demonstrate, will you? ” I replied: “We listen only to God and not to Americans.”

During this questioning, the PSB's attitudes were okay.

On Oct. 13, 1993, somebody from the PSB called me, asked about my health, and said I would be called to go to the PSB for a talk when my health gets better.

Damazhan currently has four (Sunday) services (per week) that include over 1,400 people. Please continue to pray for us!

5. 1994

Jan. 12, 1994, 2 people of the District of the United Front, led by 2 people of the Resident's Committee, came and asked about my health and the registration.

Mar. 23, three from the #p.S.B. took away 3 bags of spiritual books and Bibles.

On June 3, 9 : 25 in the morning, I was called to the Police

Station to have a talk.

The topic began from the stencil-printed books. They said we were illegal. I said, no place in the world take stencil printing illegal, not to mention all what we printed are “ Not for sale”!

Then they asked who (foreigners) came. Maybe that was caused by a foreigner's several minute greeting on June 1. I replied he just gave his greeting after we preached.

They wanted me to keep two regulations, es#p. about the registration. I said: “That is against most of God's will (90% of them go to house gatherings), for after registration there will be too many restrictions for the Gospel. I prefer to jail or to be a martyr. On June 3 last year, I was called. Today, June 3, you called me again. We didn't join to the demonstration on June 4 Event. We are not against the Government, but the Government misunderstands us. Foreigners come to our meeting and see we have freedom, they go back and spread it.”

They said, In foreign countries or in Hong Kong, registration is also regard. I said, there are also not registered.

They said, You don't follow the United States nor those in Hong Kong.

I said, Surely we don't follow them, but you mention them first. I just use that to answer you.

I came back home at 11: 00 a.m.

This time they were politely to me.

6. 1995

Mar. 25, 1995, 9: 00 a.m., Director Lam of Guangzhou Religious Affair Bureau, and the head of Yue Xiu District summoned me to meet with them to discuss the registration of our meetings.

While house meetings do not need to be registered, they said that we are not of a “family meeting”, but an “ 'open to public' house meeting.”

I said that I would rather go to prison than deal with the restrictions that registration brings, when they told me that were no restrictions, I cited many examples of restrictions.

They said that I send people to spread the Gospel everywhere. I said: “The Bible tells us to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all the nations. The people went on their own accord.”

This meeting was from 9: 00 a.m. to 10: 00 a.m.

At the end of the hours when I continued to tell them that I would not register, they asked me to go back and reconsider.

They told me that they would talk with me about this again.  This was the shortest meeting ever. Their attitude was good.

Aug. 29, 8: 30 a.m., some one came and asked me to go to talk with the #p.S.B. I said,we just began our meeting. I can't go.

Aug. 30, 9: 30 a.m., three called me to go to talk with the #p.S.B.

They asked me who came to visited you recently. They also talk about safety. They also asked about my health. I said, the doctor called me don't go out alone. Now some of my co-workers help me to preach.

Until 12 at noon, I came home. Their attitude was good.

Nov. 6, 8: 30 #p.m., the #p.S.B. called me to talk. They asked me who come these few days, and what do they bring in? Until 10 : 30 #p.m., they brought me back. They took away 40 boxes of Bibles and spiritual books. They left at 12: 30 a.m. Their attitude was good. I slept about 4 hours, and I got up to preach as usual. Praise God!

7. 1997

From 6th Nov.1995, I was not summoned for any interviews. After a quiet period of over nineteen months, I had to attend an interview arranged by the PSB from 8:30 am. to 11: 00 a.m., 20th June 1997. They asked me about the church situation in the past year or so. They also interrogated my view towards “Hong Kong’s return to China”.

I said: “After the ‘Opium War’, Britain signed the unfair treaty in which New Territories would be leased for 99 years and Hong Kong ceded. This was plunder by force. Therefore it is reasonable that ‘Hong Kong be returned to China’.”

They said: “You should express your standpoint of patriotism before others.” They asked me to give them some books which I wrote and some of my ministry tapes. I gave them some. Their attitude was good. They said we would talk again next week!

June 27, 8 : 30 a.m. to 11: the #p.S.B. called me again. They asked me who come recently, and what did they ask you. I said, a few days ago, Consul Ted Lyng of America visited me, and a journalist of America visited me yesterday. We talk about our recent condition. They interrogated my view towards “Hong Kong’s return to China” again.

I answered them the same as lask week.

They asked me the view of House Church registration. I said, concern our faith, we obey God. Christ is the head of the church. If we register, there will be many restrictions to us, even our fundamental faith will be washed away. They said, we do not call you to register immediately, but you must well consider. We’ll talk again later. Their attitude still was very good.

8. 1998

Feb. 10, 1998, after our meeting of Tuesday morning. 3 of Gugngzhou Religious Affair Bureau came. They handed me “The Controlling Law of Guangzhou Religious Affair ”, and called me to study.

I said, we’ll not register. The third point of “Religious White Paper ” (Oct. 16.1997) said: “House Chures, no need to register.” According to the # 5 law of China, local law can’t be opposite the law of China. As a citizen, we obey govemment. We hadn’t gone to march on June 4, 1989. But we are ferr of our faith, We only obey God.

They said, Sunday School is illegal. I said, China agreed to the law of the UN, that children can follow their parents to believe Jesus.

I said, If we register, our faith will be restricted. I’ll not register cven you arrest tne again.

They asked what condition that I suffer from.

I said, I suffered from cerebral arteosclerosis and slipped dise.

They said, take care of yourself.

I said, thank you!

Apr. 9, the #p. S. B. called me to go to talk the next morning. Apr. 10, they called me not to go, because they were busy.

Aug. 20, 9 to 11 a.m: 4 from Religious Affair Bureau talked with me. They asked me how I treated “The Controlling Law of Guangzhou Religious Affair ”?

I answered them as before: I’ll not register even you arrest me again, because these Laws give us no freedom. According to the Law of China, we have freedom of our faith (including all doctrines of the Bible).

There are at least four House Churches in the Bible (Ro. 16: 5, 1Co. 16 : 19, Col. 4 : 15, Phm.2). They had not registered. On Pentecost, 120 people gathered in a house (Ac. 1: 13-15). Surely they were not of the same family.

They said: “Under 18 years of age cannot discern to receive the Gospel, therefore they cannot be baptised.” I said: “Under 18 years of age also cannot discern to receive Marxism, but they can be Communist Youth League.”

They said: “Don’t criticize other religions.” I said: “Only our God is the true God. All are sinners.”

They said. Are we sinners also? I said: “God said, all are sinners. I hope you believe Jesus too! ”

They let me go back and study the Law of Guangzhou. “Next time we talk again.” Their attitude was still very good to me.

Sept. 18, 9: 30-11:a.m., the head of Religious Affair Bureau talked with me. They called me to regiser: “After regisration, you are free of faith, and your House Church will be protected.”

I answered them as before: I’ll not register even you arrest me again. As a citizen, we obey the government, but according to our faith, we obey God ( Ac. 5: 29 ).

They let me come back to consider. Their attitude was still very good.

Oct. 19, 3: 00 - 4: 30 #p.m., the head of Religious Affair Bureau talked with me. They called me to register, but I refused.

9. 1999

Mar. 3, 3: 30 #p.m., 5 from the government hall came and talk with me.

Mar. 12, 9: a.m., 5 from the Religious Affair came to search our expansive places especially the ground floor, and they said, you should not expand it.

I said: “It is my house. It is not right that I can’t use. Guangzhou Newpaper, Oct. 18, 1997 said, ‘We refuted the report of the U. S. Council that groups.’ Now you attack me!”

They said: “We are busy. We’ll talk with you again.”

I said: “I’ll not register. You arrest me again!”

Oct. 12, 9: 40 a.m. Tuesday Morning, when Chan Ni-wen preached, over 40 people from the Religious Affair including the #p. S. B. with policemen came to interrupt our meeting. They called the attendance to leave, but some didn’t go away. They wanted me to call them to leave but I haven’t. Over 50 Christians prayed and sang. They asked many things about our meeting. I said: “You arrest me again! I’ll not register.” They said we are illegal. But I said that the White Paper to the UN said, No need for House Church to register.

They said: “Only a family and some relalives. ”

I said: “In the Bible, a House Church contained over 120 people. In English, they call House Church, but not Family Church.”

Some foreigners asked me: Have they bothered you when you are meeting? I said: “No”. But, if someone will ask me again, I will say, “Yes”.

They talked to me until 12 : 15 a.m.

Their attitude was still very good to me.

Oct. 13, 8 : 00 #p.m. Wednesday Evening. When Chan Ni- Wen preached, 7 from #p. S. B came up, saying, “Have you called us because of suicidal accident?” We sang “The Cross”, and they went away. One of them said: “You continue”.

10. 2002

Jan. 23, 7: 50 #p.m., Wednesday evening, when I preached 1Thess, 3 from #p. S. B came u#p. They said: “We want to talk with you for a while.” I said: “We’ll continue our meeting, otherwise, you arrest me again.” Our ordience is very strong. Praise God!

Jan. 25 Friday evening, 7 from #p. S. B came. They said: “Take care of fire. Each floor only can contain 50 persons.” These few days we make fire exits. Praise God!

Jan. 30, 7: 50 #p.m. ,Wednesday evening, 7 from, #p. S. B came again. They said: “Separate some away. I said: “We separate some to our neighbor house already. And we made some fire exits. Do you disturb us through this? ”

Apr. 18, #p. S. B. said: “Within 20 days, you should make fit those fire exit etc.”

11. 2003

May 29, I was released for 25 years (chapter 3). This morning from 10 : 30 to over 12, the #p.S.B. called me to talk about: (1) Take care of the SARS. (2) Be careful of the fire. (3) Talk about the cult Eastern Lightning. Their attitude was very good.

12. 2004

June 14, 9: a.m., 6 from the Religious Affair called me & talked with me. In the afternoon they called our co-workers & talked to them 2 by 2. They never called our co-workers together before.

They called us to register after they asked many things about our House Church.

We said: “ Ye Xiel Wen, the head of Peking Religious Affair said, House Churches no need to register.”

Their attitude was still very good to me.

Since Oct. 12, 1999, they haven’t called me until now, over 4 years.

132009

Apr. 28, over 10 from #p. S. B. called me to register, but I refused.

Chapter 2  About Our Meetings

After I was sent back home on Feb. 23, 1990, our meetings were stopped. But every day at 9 a.m. and 7 #p.m. we had prayer meetings. Each was attended by about 10 to 20 people. There was some communications after prayer.

Our coworkers, besides me, 8 of them, they are: Weng Bin, Chen Ni-Wen, Zheng Xial Fei, Kuang En-Quan, Chen Guan-Cheng, Zhuang Xiao-Hua, Yie Shao-Xian and Guo Shu-Fen. I said to them: “We should not follow peter and say, 'I am going to fish' (Jn. 21:3). We should look up to God, He will never let us lack anything.” Praise God, for he is indeed faithful!

1. 1990

On Apr. 16, 1990, in the evening, after we prayed, every body asked me to share some Bible truth. We temporarily decided to do it on every Sunday and Thursday mornings, and Tuesday, Thursday Saturday evenings, 5 times per week. Each time about 20 people attended. I spoke to them some Bible truth, and answered their questions. I said: “Don't bring in more people.” However, more and more people were coming anyway.

Our ground floor was taken away before the Cultural Revolution, but at that moment it was used for census.  Christians went up and down directly as if they did not see the census staff on the left (of the stairway), nor “the Notice” on our door (which was torn away by somebody on Aug. 14).

May 25, due to the necessities of various aspects, I prayed the whole night. God indeed heard my prayers. During July, we had 100 people each meeting. In September, the living room of the 2nd floor was fully sited with people. On Oct. 7, we had printed hymnbooks, and were able to sing and praise the Lord together. In Dec., we had break-bread Service every Sunday evenings.

2. 1991

Ever since Mar. 1991, our meetings started to be attended lots of people. On Mar. 3, the Sunday meeting had 300 people, with many people outside on the street who could not come inside.

Mar. 24, after the Sunday break-bread meeting, sister Pan, who was once possessed by a demon, gave a very good testimony here. She was very healthy now.

May 20, the 47th baptism, 74 people altogether. This was the first baptism meeting after our church was reopened.

May 23, at the evening service, the electricity was shut down. Something was wrong with our generator also. We could only light the candles for the meeting. The whole assembly was very quiet. At that time, it was very hot and there were many people. It was God's glory that we could quiet as that.

There had been 5 baptism meetings ( from 47th to 52nd ) this year. 265 people altogather were baptised.

3. 1992

There had been 5 baptism meetings (from 53rd to 57th ) this year. 273 people altogether were baptised.

Dec. 17, at the Gospel preaching meeting led by my coworker Weng Bin, there were more than 400 people in attendance. Many people were converted.

On Jan. 3, 9 a. m., Chinese Christian trans-millenium meeting called me to speak 20 minutes by phone. I spoke 20 minuted about victory. They said: “ Before you speak, hear our choir singing.” I heard their choir sang two of my hymns.

There had been 6 baptism meetings (from 100th to 105th ) this year. 306 people altogether were baptised.

In the past, each of our meetings could only allow an audience of 300 people. Ever since June 10, 1992, we started to borrow the rear block on the 2nd floor. Hence, each meeting has a seating capacity of 350 to 400 people.

No. 35 Damazhan is composed of the front and rear blocks. The ground floor of the front block and the rear block were occupied during the Cultural Revolution. Formalities were not proceeded to take it back until Jun 1, 1993, but the people living there haven’t moved out until now.

The west side of Damazhan lane has been partially dismantled since May 1988. The dismantling has stopped at both sides of No. 35 Damazhan at the moment. The resident at the rear block had moved out, and room was vacant. We intended to rent it, but the authority allowed us to utilize it. The Lord prepared more space for us, which was beyond our expectation.

Since June 1, 1993, we took back the ground floor, but the people living there hadn’t moved out until Sept. 1998 we can use. On Sept. 17, we began to baptise in the ground floor where can contain about 100 people. Now, all can contain over 500 people. Four times a week, total number is about 2000, but sometimes some people still can’t come in. Recently, we haven’t moved, but people come more and more. Praise God!

12. 2001

MOVE  TO  RONGGUI  Li

The house breaking and removal of Damazhan started in may 1988. All the houses were dismantled from west part of the lane. However, dues to the shortage of capital it was terminated till three or four houses away from our house. And only several houses towards Zhongshan 5 Lu were removed dues to the existence of the subway. The dorm of the Guangzhou Merchandise Mansion, which is opposite to our house, was removed too. Only the small part around our house has been kept from removal for over 12 years, which obviously shows us God’s protection. I was only 5 years old when my grandfather bought this house after his return from Detroit of US. He didn’t buy a house at any part, which had been dismantled. Who had told him to buy right this house so that our meeting can be prolonged over 12 years here? Praise God.

During Feb. 25, 1999, someone introduced me the house of #15 Ronggui Li. After the survey we felt content with it. But if the removing committee hadn’t gone on with the project of removal we would have to afford the new house by ourselves. A few days later after we prayed for this, on 2nd of March, 1999, an affiche was put on saying that the removal of Damazhan would restart before March of the following year. Around 2nd of March 2000, another affiche was put on saying that the removal would be completed before next March. It’s a wonder that nothing affected our house in the past 12 years but once we started choosing a new place for meeting the project of removal started again. So with some brethren’s prepay and my grandfather’s house in Zhongshan 5 Lu we bought the house of # 15 Ronggui Li. All things were solved after the removing committee paid us for the old house’ removal.

Dec. 11, 2000, Ronggui Li no water soak after big rain. Before, water soak to knees after raining. Before we move to Ronggui Li people can walk easily. Praise God!

Dec. 29, big meter for measuring electricity permitted for us that we could book air-conditioner.

On Feb. 5, 2001, our co-workers gathered together in Ronggui Li to pray for the moving at 4 o’clock #p.m. Some fasted and prayed for this on Feb. 9.

After the last meeting in Damazhan on Feb. 14(Wendnesday), we started to move and we were gathering in # 15 Ronggui Li on Feb. 15, 2001.

Many Christians gave us help during that moving. It was wonderful that no rain during our moving while raining before and afterwards!

We had our first Sunday service ( Feb. 18, 2001), I preached Ecclesia chapter one. Three stories with the stares and the court, people crowded every corner, and many couldn’t come in outside the street. Praise God! After we moved here, the back part of # 13 groundfloor was to be sold out . We wanted to buy, but they rent out for half a year.

On Aug. 9, 2001, some people came to crack down the last part of the 3rd floor and the 4th floor which were illegaled when we bought this house. In the same day, the back part of #13 groundfloor was sold out, and someome paid the quota for us. On Oct. 8, we got the contract.

There had been 6 baptism meetings (from 106th to 111th ) altogether 346 people baptised.

13. 2002

On Jan. 6, first Sunday service, over 800 people crowded every corner, even # 13 groundfloor, and many couldn’t come in. Praise God!

On Jan. 23, Wednesday evening, I preach 1Thess. Suddenly 3 #p.S.B. came up at 7:30, because they want to talk with me for a few words. They said: “People are too crowded, very dangerous, without fire extinguisher, nor fire exit.” People said: “God protects us always. You believe Jesus.” After that, we made fire exits. When we bought # 13 groundfloor, they didn’t let us made door. After they said that we had no fire exit, then we made fire exits. Praise God !

There had been 6 baptism meetings (from 112th to 117th ) this year. 294 people altogether were baptised.

Chapter 3  My Recent Health

1. 1990

On Mar. 11, I had a bad headache all day long. After getting up in the morning, I had a terrible pain behind my right ear. Even acupuncture was not effective, on other hand, it got worse and worse, with a continuous buzzing noise inside my ear. The painful period were longer than those without pain, and there was a telephone chiming like sound. At last I found it unable to stand it. I went to Number One Municipal Hospital to have a sealing injection. Thus, I could fall asleep at night.

On the 12th, my headache lightened, but I felt dizzy. On the 13th, I was slightly dizzy. On Aug. 3, at 3 am, my headache did not stop until daybreak.

Sept. 20, recent days I had headache. Later, no such phenomenon any more! Praise the Lord, and thank you for your prayers!

2. 1991

On Apr. 13, I had a lower back pain. It was very difficult for me to take a basin of water.

May 23, I had serious headache for the whole day, especially at my back. It was stopped after a pain release injection.

On Dec. 25, my head swam for whole day. It was diagnosed as cerebral arteriosclerosis. I felt very tired everyday at about 10 am. It was better after a noon na#p. But little was affected for the morning services. Praise God! Many people told me: “Many people at home and abroad are praying for you”. Dear brothers and sisters, please continue your intercessory prayers for me, as it is dearly appreciated.

Since I was diagnosed as having cerebral arteriosclerosis on Dec. 25, I was quite listless, and sleepy every morning.

3. 1992

In the beginning of March, I suffered headache daily, but it was no problem for me to preach.

On Dec. 1, Tuesday morning, after I preached for an hour at the service, I had a bad chest pain (pericardial pain). I was very dizzy and my voice was changed. But I did not fall. After a pause of ten minutes, I was able to continue my sermon, as if nothing happened. Thank God! I assume Apostle John must have departed his life on earth at his pulpit.

On Dec. 14, I had a serious headache the whole afternoon.

Jan. 13, terrible sore throat, after a B-type ultrasonic examination in the hospital, my disease was diagnosed as cardiac arteriosclerosis (the artery going to the brain). Therefore the blood supplying for my brain was not sufficient. Although I had pharyngitis, my vocal cords were normal. The doctor warned me not to go out alone.

Jan. 14, very tired, totally languid.

On Mar. 16, at about 3 o'clock early in the morning, I felt dizzy on the way to the toilet, but at 9 : 15, I preached as usual.  Thanks are to God!

On May 7, I began to get my heart checked up with 24-hour heart tester in The 1st Hospital Attached to the Zhong Shan Medical University.

On May 8, the heart tester showed that while I was reading at noon, there was one minute my heart-beats were just 36. The doctor said I got to have an operation to get an in-body pace maker installed.

May 17, in the evening, headache, I couldn't fall into asleep until 3 o'clock at the mid-night. I got up at 6 for preparation for preaching it was all right. Thanks be to God ! At 12 at night, my heart was quite uncomfortable.

On May 21, I checked up at the People's Hospital of the Province. There was no need to use pace maker, I just needed to take Xin Bao (a kind of heart medicine). Now my heart is OK, just the cerebral arteriosclerosis, but I feel much better now.  Please continue to pray for me!

On Aug. 6, I had a headache. I visited people and destroyed idols in the evening. I had a terrible headache when I came back, after taking some pills of painkiller, I couldn't sleep well through the night.

20 years after confiscation, 32 people from the U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou interviewed with me, 160 journalists from various countries visited me.

Many Chinese and foreign pastors, believers, etc., attended our meetings and prayed for us.

Thanks a lot!

Although there were so many eminent people coming to attend our meetings or to visit me, God asked me to bear in mind, “...…Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.” ( Zechariah 4 : 6 ) Ezra said: “For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the King, ‘the good hand of our God is on everyone who looks to Him, but His anger is against all who forsake Him’.” ( Ezra 8 : 22 )

It is God's interest if he wants to send us soldiers and horsemen. As “The King's heart is in the hand of the Lord, he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.” ( Proverbs 21: 1) It would be impossible for me to hire one reporter to come here, but everyone is sent by God, thus we can boast nothing.  If it is good, it is God's preparation. If the situation is changed, it is also God's testing. Our eyes should only look up to the Lord, and God will surely bless us.

I often say: “My elementary school compositions were very red-our teacher’s correction more red than my black words.” My father said that my compositions were bad smell. I had no certificate except my elementary school one, but lost. Now I had already written over 190 booklets, and many visitors come, not because I have anything, but all is from God. May God be glorified!

Chapter 5  Miscellaneous

1. Slanders

(1) On July 30, 1991, rumor said that someone in the countryside would send me a baby of daughter and it was mine. I waited the whole time, and no one ever brought me a baby.

(2) In 1993, Spring, rumor said every body to be baptised in our Baptism service got to put off everything.

Actually in each baptism service, every body to be baptised is told: no short pants for male, no skirt for female, but long pants instead.

(3) Aug. 1993, a letter from Anhui province told me that Fan Yishuan (and his elder brother Fan Yisheng) used my name and simulated my chop without my permission to do a so called “International Baptists Damazhan Branch Anhui Prayer Meeting”.

The false name and chop is as below:

Brothers and sisters, please do not believe them! I myself is from the Cheungzhou Baptist, HK, but here in Damazhan, there is no limitation of denominations, not even “International Baptists”.

(4) Aug. 19, 1993, it was said that somebody asked to do something against us, and also somebody asked to send some guys to disturb our services.

(5) Jan. 31, 1994, some one called in my name to the People's Hospital of the Province to send me an ambulance, so that I had to pay 55 Yuan.

(6) May 5, 1994, rumor: within two weeks we must join to the “Three Selves”, otherwise, they will confiscate us again.

2. Four fire accidents

(1) On July 27, 1991, on Saturday evening, after the meeting, fire and smoke rose from the diesel generator at the 2nd floor.  It turned off soon by itself. It would be very hazardous if the fire and smoke lasted for a little bit longer, but God broke its circuit.  People had not left yet then, but it was very quiet.  Praise God for His own preservation.

(2) On Feb. 3,1992, our boiler switch at 2nd floor burned, but there was no fire. The power of our electrical water boiler is over thousand of watts. It was again God's grace to stop it.  May glory be unto our living God in the highest.

(3) On May 7, 1992, the circuit of a charger burnt. If it were not for the Lord's watching, surely we would have had a fire accident.

(4) Aug. 5, there was a fire on the 3rd floor timber structure of No. 35 rear block. There are residents on the 3rd floor, as we only used the 2nd floor of the rear block. But it was extinguished by them, and we were saved from the fire. It was once again the Lord's miraculous deliverance.

3. Writing spiritual pamphlets

Since I came out from prison, I wrote some booklets, until 1999 I wrote one every month. On Apr.24, 2008, I fininshed the 200th one.

5. Calls from U. S.

Jan. 3, 2000, at 9 : 30 a.m., I received a call from Pine Zhijun Wang, Editor-in-Chief of Christian Life Quarterly: He asked me to speak 20 minutes on phone to a trans-Millennium Meeting of Chinese Oversea Christians, which was held in Chicago, IL USA. Before I spoke, their choir sang 2 of my hymns from the Voice of the Desert Hymnal.

6. The amplifier went down

Sept. 5, 1993, during Sunday morning service, the amplifier on the 3rd floor was down. Brother Chen Ende usually helps us fix such electrical equipment, when he knew the amplifier went down, just changed another one and solved the problem in time.  He usually attends the Saturday evening service, but he arrived today. God sent him here! Thanks to God!

7. Led funeral meeting during my birthday

13. The Central Air Conditioner couldn’t work

During our Break Bread Meeting (Sunday evening, July 6, 2003), our Central Air Conditioner couldn’t work. Next morning we call someone to repair, but he said: “It happened upon the electronic computer board. We’ll buy it from Hong Kong on Wednesday.”

We have our Sunday service repeat on Tuesday morning, therefore we ordered some big ice pieces ready to put upon our roof.

But on Tuesday morning, the Central Air Conditioner worked as usual, and those big ice pieces had no way to be brought in. Praise God !

Recenty my right leg suffers painfully, that I cannot go. On Nov. 13, Pine Zhijun Wong sent some Christians to take video-cast when I preached “The Cross & Christians”.

Wonderfully, he called me on Aug. 21, but I suffered from Se#p. 8; the meeting began on Dec. 26, but I had no pain since Dec. 18 (About 100 days from Se#p. 8 to Dec. 18) !

(2) In the beginning of 2004, Rev. Pine Zhijun Wong invited me to attend the Chinese Christian Meeting in Hong Kong on Oct. 30. But on Se#p.14, some water filled my right knee. God let me stay in China, because I was called to serve Him in Guangzhou.

(3) Se#p. 2006, I received another call from Pine Zhijun Wong. He asled me to preach in the Gospel for China Conference (“Chinese Oversea Christoan Meeting ”) on Dec. 26, 2006, in Chicago IL. U. S. A.

Suffering is nothing to us, as long as we have the right attitude of suffering (1 Pe. 4:1), God will strengthen us. Likewise, it is not difficult to be faithful, but the difficulty is to “ be faithful, even to the point of death ”, for the Lord “will give you the crown of life” ( Rev. 2: 10 ).

Praise God, for He has abundant love. King David said: “It was good for me to be afflicted.” In 1955, at our Sunday worship the audience did not exceed 400 people. After I was released from jail, it increased from 4 to more than 900 people ( in three meetings ). Ever since the confiscation in 1990, until now, it has already passed 1600 people ( in four meetings ). The more we are persecuted, the more people come to our church. Many times there are not enough seats. Four people each pew is squeezed into five, still there are many people standing on the street. Not only we are afflicted, but also we have to endure our afflictions, even to delight in our sufferings, which be blessed with much greater grace.  Dear brothers and sisters, please continue your intercessory prayers for us. Thank you.

Please read: Luke 6: 22-23, 7: 19-20, 23; Acts 28: 30-31.

Please pray for us more !
